Grammar " review the past simple"

Description

In this lesson, the students are going to review " the past simple tense" and through different activities they will practice on some of the regular and Irregular verbs in the past. The lesson will start with a discussion on what they learned in the previous lessons about the past. Then the students will practice on this tense through different activities which lead them to the lesson.

  • To provide review and practice of the past simple tense

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of last holiday
  • To provide product writing practice of a sentences in the context of last week end vacation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will greet the students then I will discuss what they studied in the previous lessons about the past simple tense through two past sentences on the board and elicit the form from the students then I will draw a time line on the board and ask them when we use the past simple tense to elicit the meaning of the past simple tense.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

I will stick on the board the main forms of different verbs and ask the students to work individually to write the past forms of these verbs then I will get WC feedback and stick the past forms for these verbs in a correct order. Then I will stick some of the irregular verbs in the past and divide the students into two groups to start the activity of board- rush to grab the past form of the verbs that I will say.

Teach (5-8 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I will clarify that the verbs of past forms divide into regular and irregular forms and elicit from the students how can these verbs work with the negative forms and how we can make questions using the past simple tense "Did ...." . " What did you ...."

Test #2 (7-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

I will ask the students to write two sentences in two pieces of paper about what they did at last weekend vocation using the past simple then I will involve them to start "find who ..." activity by collecting these pieces of paper and demonstrating what they will do. Then I will ask the students to fill in the gaps and put the past simple of each verb into the spaces and I will elicit that some of the verbs are regular and some are irregular. then they will compare their answers in pairs and I will get WC feedback to do the error correction.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask the students to write what they did yesterday using the past simple form of different verbs then I will open a discussion to get the feedback
