Description

In this lesson students will review making wh- questions in the Simple Past tense. Students are first asked to put three jumbled questions in the correct order. Then they do a mingling activity to ask and answer wh-questions in the class. The lesson will be finished by a free speaking practice of group work talking about last weekend.

Main Aims

  • Students will be better able to make wh-questions in the Simple Past tense in the context of last weekend activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students' speaking skills through a free practice of group discussion about last weekend

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T arranges the chairs in a half circle. T talks about holidays and asks SS where they usually go for holidays. I want you to make Qs to ask me about my last year holiday. SS are given the envelops of jumbled Qs.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T elicits the corrrect Qs and writes on the board. T wants SS to ask him the Qs and answers them. T: I'd like you to talk about this weekend. T writes on the board some prompts. where / eat / lunch What time / go to bed SS make Qs to ask each other.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T underlines the Verbs in the Qs on the board and asks SS the reason. T puts another example if needed. T can give the handout of Question words, if SS need. T can draw the table of the book, if needed and elicits the answers.

Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T asks CCQs and draws the timeline on the board. T highlights /w/ and /v/ and does some drilling. Sentence stress is also drilled.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

SS sit in pairs of A and B. Each is given a copy of cards A and B. SS read their 5 Qs and write their answers individually. T mentions they must not show their partner their card. Then, student A tells student B their answer for Q1. Student B tries to guess the original Q. T demos the first one on the board. ICQs. SS change their roles and repeat the activity.

Extra Practice of TL (8-10 minutes) • Flexi stage To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

If time, Each S is given a piece of paper, a sentence about Andy and a copy of Handout. SS complete the sentences using the info on the strips of paper. SS mingle, ask and answer Qs to complete sentences on the Handout. T monitors to make sure they are making Wh-Qs in the past tense.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • For SS to practice the TL in a semi-controlled activity

T tells SS to write 2\3 sentences about these wh-words. what, when, how Then in pairs they say the sentences to each other. SS should make questions to ask each other. T monitors and provides FB.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks SS to think of 3 Qs about Weekend. SS Sit in groups of 3. They ask each other about yesterday, the weekend. T monitors and takes notes of mistakes. FB is given.

Delayed error feedback (2-4 minutes) • For SS to notice their own mistakes and get feedback

T puts a few errors on the board and asks the class to correct. SS drill the Qs.
