Description

In this lesson, students learn some basic clothes vocabulary for buying clothes in English.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of some basic clothes words in the context of shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about buying clothes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets Ss and shows some photos of people shopping. T asks Ss if they like shopping and what they generally go shopping for.

Exposure (0-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows some flashcards about clothes. First Ss guess what is in the pictures, then T elicits clothes words and drills. Ss match the photos with the clothes words on learningapps.com

Highlighting (0-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T shows some pictures of people wearing different clothes and asks multiple choice questions of what the people in the pictures are wearing.

Clarification (0-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss focus on the photos and elicit what is happening. T asks the question and plays the audio once the whole way through for Ss to see if their guesses were correct and to see what the problem is. T checks the answer.

Controlled Practice (0-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for free practice

T gives Ss time to read sentences 1-7 and think about what the missing words might be. Then T plays the audio for Ss to complete the gaps. T plays the audio once again if necessary. T puts Ss into breakout rooms to compare their answers with a partner. T checks answers with Ss.

Free Practice (0-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T puts Ss into breakout roms to talk about their favourite clothes. Ss tell their partners' favourite clothes.
