Grammar lesson. Aim is to clarify the use of extreme adjectives/intensifiers.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of extreme adjectives in the context of big events

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of big events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will nominate 2 or 3 ss to think about and answer how they felt the last time they went to a big event (carnival, circus act, a theme park, a football match, a concert, a play, a parade etc..) Example: How did you feel the last time you went to a concert?

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my ss to read the text and answer the questions (google forms).

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask ss to highlight the TL in the text.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING I will ask ss CCQ's to clarify meaning. Well, since it was December it was freezing! / Is it correct to say a bit freezing? No A: Were there a lot of people? B: Yes, it was completely packed! / If the movie theatre is packed, it is extremely crowded. FORM I will have ss identify which intensifiers are appropriate for extreme adjectives. Packed Options: A bit, absolutely, pretty Cold Big Wonderful PRONUNCIATION I will have ss identify amount of syllables of some extreme adjectives. I will then pronounce and have them identify which syllable has stress. Choral drilling. Terrifying Gorgeous Freezing Huge

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will ask ss to choose the correct answer depending on the intensifier/context. 1. If you don't bring a scarf and some gloves you will be absolutely __________________. * 2. I couldn't deposit the money because the bank was pretty ____________________. * 3. The Broadway show was absolutely ______________. 4. My dad was really ____________ when I crashed his Ferrari. He didn't talk to me for a month! Answer key: 1. Freezing 2. Crowded 3. Wonderful 4. Furious I will ask SS to compare answers via private message in chat box.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will have SS discuss the following topic in BR rooms: Find someone in your group who: Experienced a hilarious situation.. Experienced a terrifying situation. Saw something/someone gorgeous. Felt furious after something happened. DEC: 1. I experienced a pretty terrifying situation. 2. Miguel saw woman gorgeous in the street.
