Grammar lesson I wish, if only
Upper-intermediate level


In this lesson students will learn how to use: I wish and if only in the context of desires.



Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of If only, I wish in the context of Technology and apps.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about desires of technology in the context of apps.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T oresents 3 questions to students about the topic which is technology and desires. -What app on your cellphone do you use the most? -What technology do you have now that you didn’t have when you were younger? -In your opinion, How will technology evolve in the future? Will it be good or bad for humanity? Ss ask these questions in pairs. T conducts OCFB.

Presentation through the text (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T presents a reading text with the vocabulary and 2 questions: - What kind of app would she like to have now? - What did she want her parents to be like? Students read infividually and then they peer check. T conducts OCFB.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: T gives students a Jamboard where students. in pairs, need to put the sentences in the correct cathegory Desires for the present Desires for the past CCQs: Are these wishes or plans? WISHES Are they probable or improbable to happen? IMPROBABLE When we say these expressions is because we want things to change? YES FORM T gives students another Jamboiard where they have to organize 4 sentencetes in pairs CCQs: - (T pointing at the desires for the present sentences) Are these sentences about the present or the past? - After wish is the verb in present ? NO IN THE PAST - (T pointing at the desires for the past sentences) Are these sentences about the present or the past? - After wish is the verb in past simple? NO IN PAST PERFECT. Pronunciation T writes 4 sentences and asks which words are stressed.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T writes 4 sentences. Ss need to rewrite those sentences using If only or I wish. T conducts OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives students 4 questions. They work in pairs and answer the questions using the grammar learnt. What phone you wish you had? Would you rather had more free time? What things you wish you could change about the past? What would you have liked to have when you were a kid that didn't exist back then? T conducts OCBF.

Delayed Error correction (1-2 minutes) • To give feedback on vocabulary

T conducts OCBF on rewriting and reformulatin vocabulary,
