Description

In this lesson, students will learn few vocabulary words in the context of "Secrets and tricks". The lesson will start with a gap-fill text about the vocabulary words that will be discussed in detail in the next stage. This will be the first stage of the lesson followed by a reading activity and interactive games to further brush up their concepts on the topic.

Main Aims

  • Students will clarify meaning, form, pronunciation of few vocabulary words and use it more accurately in the context of "Secrets and tricks".

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will undergo listening practice to recall their previous lesson concepts in the context of ordering and complaining about sales-products. To provide fluency speaking practice in a group discussion in the context of "Secrets and tricks".

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To generate Ss interest in the topic and set the context

T commences the class by playing a video on "World's amazing magic tricks" and also performs a magic trick with a stick. T introduces the topic of magic and elicit the word "trick".

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Chesting the HOs, T introduces the topic about the story of a magician and ask SS to replace the word in italics with a word from the box in HO by guessing the meaning. Time limit and ICQs. SS check their answers in pairs. FB is given and answers are discussed orally.

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T writes down the vocabulary words to be taught to the SS on the WB and elicit meaning from SS. SS discuss in pairs and try to guess the meaning. T provides some hint for SS to get a basic idea.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T proposed the topic in details through slide show presentation. T tries to elicit the meaning of the word from SS. T displays meaning, pronunciation and form of the word with additional pictures to make concepts perfectly clear. SS discuss in pairs about the various meanings of the word "trick". T highlights the pronunciation and stress of the words. T elicits various answers and explains the meanings. SS do some drilling

Controlled Practice (Reading text) (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T writes the heading on the WB. Chesting the HO, T asks SS to read the article quickly and get an overall idea of the passage. T distributes HOs containing questions related to the passage. SS sit in two groups and answer the questions. T sets a time limit: 2 mins ICQs SS check with partner and answers the questions. T provides FB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T introduces the task (Hangman Activity). T asks students to close all their notebooks and tells them to recall the words they have learnt. SS sit in groups of two and guess the vocabulary words. ICQs T monitors SS and provides FB.

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives out a Q about SS personal experiences and perspectives about magic tricks and gets them to work in groups. T regroups the SS and monitors. T take notes of SS mistakes.
