Description

Aims: To introduce and practice narrative verbs forms and the past perfect continuous.

Materials

Abc WB Pages

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of the past perfect continuous in the context of narrative verb forms

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will talk in pairs asking each other other "What did you do today?"

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will identify whether verbs are past continuous or past simple in 3 questions, followed by filling in when we use each form for 3 fill-in-the-blanks. After working on each section individually, they will compare answers with a partner. Following student work, we will conduct open class feedback. Students will then do 2 questions and 2 fill-in-the-blanks for past simple, past perfect simple, and past perfect continuous.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students will be asked to fill in the blanks for the proper form and meaning. Teacher will review the pronunciation and annotate where the sentence stress is for the words. Afterwards, students will attempt to convert 4 sentences into Past perfect simple and past perfect continuous.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will write the given verbs in the correct form individually. They will then compare answers with a partner. After this, we will conduct OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will practice converting past statements into past perfect continuous. One student will say something in the past tense and their partner will change it to the past perfect continuous. Students will alternate roles throughout the task.

Delayed Error Correction (1-2 minutes) • To correct any mistakes found throughout the lesson

Students will be provided with 3 incorrect statements and must identify and correct the mistakes as a class.
