Pre-activity (7 minutes) • To further develop context and prepare for TL

Look at the text "Love in the supermarket". Look at the pictures and guess the last word. Work in pairs. Are you working alone? No. How many words do you need to guess? One. 2 min Class feedback. Instructions for HO1: look at the speech bubbles from "Love in the supermarket" and complete them with answers A-K. One bubble has already been completed. Give HO1 to students. Work alone (3 min). Monitor. Now check your answers with your partner. Class feedback. Play audio track (CD3, track 2) and tell the students to listen and check their answers.

Test #1 (5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Instructions for HO2: write the sentence and question below in reported speech. Work alone. Are you working in pairs? No. Are you ticking the correct answer? No. Give HO2 to students (2 min). Monitor. Check your answers with your partner. Provide students with HO2 – Answer key.

Teach (15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Reported speech is used to talk about things other people have said. As a result, you usually have to change the pronouns: I like... > She said she liked... Using that after said and told is optional: I like shopping > She said (that) she liked shopping After said, don't use a person or pronoun: He said he was tired. After told, you must use a person or pronoun: He told me he was tired. 1. REPORTED STATEMENTS (TENSES) They usually change like this: present > past will > would past simple/present perfect > past perfect Give examples. 2. REPORTED STATEMENTS (MODAL VERBS) Some modal verbs change: can > could may > might must > had to Other modals stay the same: could might should Give examples. 3. REPORTED QUESTIONS When you report a question, the tenses change as in a reported statement. When a question begins with a verb (not a question word), add if. You also have to change the word order to subject + verb, and not use do / did. --- Let's do some examples: His brother said: "He loves someone else" > His brother said (that) he loved someone else She told me: "I will always love you" > She told me (that) she would always love me. + 4 examples for reported questions. Pronunciation: stress, intonation, phonetics. Drill (class then students randomly).

Test #2 (10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Instructions for HO3: complete the sentences using reported speech. Work alone (5 min). Demonstrate the first sentence. Are you writing? Yes. Are you working with your partner? No. Give HO3 to students. Monitor. Check your answers with your partner. Provide HO3 – Answer key. Whole class feedback.

Controlled practice (5 minutes) • To provide students with accuracy speaking practice using the target language

Look at pictures 1–6. Tell the story in reported speech. Choose another student than your partner. Demonstrate with one student: He asked her if she needed any help... Are you working alone? No. Are you writing? No. Stand up! You have 5 min. Play relaxing music. Give feedback. Praise the students.

Flexi-stage (5 minutes) • To provide students with fluency speaking practice

Ask students to think about the last conversation they had with one of their friends or a family member. Tell your partner about it using the reported speech. Monitor. Praise the students.
