Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice by using a text about big family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of family

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T elicit by talking about their family with pictures. Then, Ss work in pairs and share about their family, focus questions: is it big or small, how many family members they have, who are they, are they living together and etc.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach some vocabularies and review those they have learned from previous lesson. Then share the task link to Ss and ask them to work in pairs or group (for odd numbers) to match the vocabulary with the pictures or definitions. Then discuss the answer and check understanding by asking CCQs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Assign Ss into 2 groups, A and B, A will be reading HO1, and B will be reading HO2. A set of numbers will be provided and Ss will have to read the text and scan for the numbers in a short time e.g 1 min to find out what do they refer to. Then, Ss to work in pairs and tell their partner about their text, by sharing what the numbers from both text refer to. Remind Ss to write down the details for the class discussion later. T can demonstrate the task and ICQs to make sure they understand the instructions.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Send HO3 to Ss and ask Ss to work in pairs, this time allocate more time e.g.3 mins for them to read the text again to look for specific details and complete the exercise by matching the correct details to the family group. Then, discuss the answers and provide feedback in the main room.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In order to expand the learning in this topic, Ss work in 3 or 4 in a group, and talk about what are the good and bad things about life in a big or small family Then discuss and share the opinions in the main room.
