The Lexis lesson is designed to introduce and practice words, (while, next, then, after, finally) in the context of graffiti.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification by introducing connecting words, (while, next, then, after, finally) in the context of graffiti.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of while, next, then, after, finally in the context of freer speaking practice.

Procedure

Stage # 1 Warmer/Lead-in Graffiti Lead-In #1 (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

I will show a picture of graffiti to the Ss and ask them 2 questions. 1) Why do people do graffiti? 2) Is there a lot of graffiti where you live? (What is it like?)

Stage # 2 Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will present the text, 'Banksy Text #2' to the Ss and instruct them to put the three pictures in the order they appear in the article numbers 1-3. Answer Key : 1) B, 2) A, 3) C

Stage # 3 Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will go over words used with the Ss in the text for clarification covering MFP.

Stage # 4 Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will have the students go over the handout Controlled Practice # 4 and in pairs choose the correct word for the beginning of the sentence.

Stage # 5 Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will instruct Ss to write a short paragraph using the words while, next, then, after, finally, about something they do on a regular basis.
