Description

Learning and reviewing the Present Perfect tense with Just, Already and Yet.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Welcome the students to class. Ask how they are and if they have any news - make sure to acknowledge all of the students, make sure all cameras and microphones are working and turned on. Bring up a list of -ed adjectives from the previous lesson and mime one of them. Have the sts guess which one T is miming. Ask a confident sts to mime another one, have sts guess again. Work around the class until the students are settled and T is satisfied with the review.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Books closed. Ask Sts what they have done in the last half an hour and what they have and haven't done today. Write their answers on the board underlining any target language (already, just, yet).

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Books open. Read the sentences in Q1 and complete the rules as a class.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Put Sts in mixed ability pairs. Ask them to read the conversation and choose the correct option. Tell the Sts they can use Q1 to help. Invite pairs to perform the dialogue and go through the reasoning for answers as a group.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Re-read Q1 together as a group. Ask Sts whether the sentences are positive, negative or question forms. Complete the rules in Q3. Point out that 'Just' and 'Already' go in the same position as adverbs of frequency like 'usually'

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Elicit what tense is used with 'Just', 'Already' and 'Yet' in Exercises 1 and 2 and how it is formed. Watch the YouTube video to help Sts engage with the Present Perfect form. Review Past Participles from Q4. Do the first question together on the board. Put Sts back into pairs and ask them complete Q4 together, paying attention to the rules.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask students to imagine they are going to a party, ask them what they might need to do before they go eg. chose their cloths, buy a present. Sts read the words in the box and compare them to their ideas. Read the instructions. Sts ✔ what Kate has already done, ✖ what she hasn't done. Sts have 30 secs to memorise the picture and the actions. Put Sts into pairs, they should write six sentences about Kate using 'already' and 'yet'.
