In this lesson, students will learn news related vocabulary in the context of fake news the first step is to set the context to the SS by showing them a short video followed by a little discussion for the SS to practice speaking then various activities where they practice the targeted vocabulary then the T will proceed to show them a slide containing a picture with both fake news and social media SS will proceed to connect between them then the T will have to give SS questions for a debate to practice speaking.

Main Aims

  • For students to speak about their experience with fake news using first the discussion method then a debate .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To learn the vocabulary and different expression associated specifically with fake news.


Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students to the topic fake news

- T greets students then shows them a self-made video about fake news where it is mentioned that since aliens begin living with human problems have raised which led to riots and protests - ss are given different question about the video such as what type of video i? is it what was it Iabout ?is this true or not ? - T elicits from the students then further hints to further put them in the contest.

More Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To raise interest and relate to the lesson in a personal level

- T will give SS three questions to talk about their own experiences how often do they watch news ? if they even were in a situation where they were exposed to fake news . - T will will give SS clear instructions for they have to pair up and ask these questions to their partners then T will follow with ICQ and give them 4 min then send them into breakout rooms. - T chooses 2 individuals and elicit from them answers about their partners.

Matching key vocabulary Activity (6-7 minutes) • to provide Ss with controlled practice of vocabulary

- T will give students a key vocabulary activity in the learning activity app first he will send it in the chatbox telling the SS to open their chat box and making sure everyone has no technical problems. - T will first demonstrate an example while screen sharing then give clear instruction that the SS will have to do pair work and have about 3 minutes and give them enough time since it's a little bit challenging than the do ICQ. - T will monitor in the breakout rooms quietly making sure that everyone is participating in the activity - After finishing the activity the T will do ICQ on which vocabulary they struggle with then follow up with quick feedback.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the Key vocabulary

-T shows the key vocabulary each one of them in different slides while also providing audio with the pronunciation and the definition. - T will pronounce each word chooses individuals to repeat it and in this case, T has two option because Syrian students mainly struggle with the letter p so T will choose individuals who struggle with this type of problem and Turkish mainly on stressed words so T will try to choose SS for the same reason. - T has the SS repeat the pronunciation and maybe depends on the timing T will instruct them to give examples.

Controlled Practice (5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- T will send the students on the chatbox the next activity where the SS has to match the vocabulary we use to describe accurate news and fake news. -T will demonstrate the activity in the share screen then instructs the students to do the same then sends them into break out to partner up then do the ICQ. - T will monitor in the breakout rooms. - T will not do the follow up as it is a practice activity to make sure they understood the difference.

Free Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide free speaking practice and improve levels of accuracy using key vocabulary

- T will start with a question what do you take helps fake news spread so fast and mentions social media to quickly put them in the contest. - T will show students question in the slide these questions are purposely put controversially so that will help the SS quickly know their point of view. - Then the T will instruct the student to pair up and discuss if you agree with these statements or no and ask your partners then do ICQ then the SS will practice speaking while debating while free practicing.
