Description

In this lesson students learn about places in a town or country through a guided discovery about three different towns/cities. The lesson starts with a discussion about where they like to go on holiday and what places they like to have around them when they are on holiday. This is followed by a word list where students must tick the words that they know. After this they must do an exercise where they will match pictures with the words given for more understanding. This is followed by a listening for certain stress words in a sentence. Teacher elicit from students a few nouns, verbs, adjectives and negatives and ask if they think these are stressed or unstressed. Next they will have listening for gist where Teacher puts three sentences on the board that they need to listen to for the answers. This is followed by listening for more detail where they have to match the 9 sentences of the stressed sentences to the listening to find out which ones belong to which town/city. Finally there is some semi-controlled speaking practice where they have to choose which city/town they would like to visit to finally find out which one is the most popular.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Homes and shops - My kind of place in the context of Where people go on holiday or live

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Places in a town lexis in the context of listening where people live or go on holiday.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will tell story of the places she likes to visit in other countries and then in Istanbul and see if they can guess what the lesson will be about.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss will use HO1 to tick the words that they know. Next, ss will get HO2 to match the pictures and the words. T will give ss the answer key to this by writing it on the WB. Now they should know the meaning of all the words by seeing the pictures. They will discuss in groups which of these places are important to them where they live or go on holiday.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Ss will get HO3 to look at pictures to decide which is a big city, a town or a village. They will discuss in groups which things from HO1 they can see in the pictures. Ss will now be given HO4 to listen for the stressed words in the sentences. T briefly elicit from them if they know the difference between There is and There are because in the follow-up lesson they will get intensive practice on this. T will drill the stress of the words by model and letting them repeat the sentences. These exercises before listening for gist finally will help them to listen quickly for the information that they need to give the answers to the questions. T will put 3 questions on the WB for the listening for gist that will follow. Which person talks about: 1. where he/she lives now? 2. where his/her family lives? 3. where he/she goes on holiday? T will elicit the answers from them as a WC.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Ss will work in pairs again looking again at HO4 to discuss which city/town on the pictures are they relating to. T tell them there are 3 sentences for each place. Ss will listen again after a few minutes and check their answers. T will elicit answers to make sure they have the correct ones.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss work in groups. Discuss which place they would like to visit. Regroup students after a few minutes to form new groups to find out what the conclusion is - Which place is the most popular? T will do error correction as they have discussions in the groups.
