Listening and Speaking
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, we will start a discussion to elicit information about the topic and introduce some vocabulary we will tackle later, then students will listen to a journalist talking about a dating experiment. After that, students will answer some questions related to the listening audio. Finally, students will work in pairs and describe a person they know well by giving some information about that person.

Materials

Abc SB(English File Pre-intermediate p.9), fourth edition.
Abc Two audio clips.
Abc Power Point Slides.

Main Aims

  • For students to listen for details to understand a person talk about their dating experiment. in the context of daily life.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To learn some vocabulary associated with dating someone.
  • For students to describe a person to their peers by giving basic information about him/her.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • Create interest in a listening activity about dating someone.

T asks to elicit information from Ss about the topic (dating someone).

Pre-teaching vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To present 6 words or phrases that will help in the listening activity.

T shows 6 different words and phrases related to the listening on dating someone. T elicits from the students the meanings of the 6 vocabulary items.

While-Listening Activity – Listening for Details (25-30 minutes) • To gain a deeper understanding of the listening.

T reads the questions which Ss will answer after listening to the audio. T plays the first listening audio. T plays the listening audio once again to let Ss answer and check their answers. T reads the statements which Ss will guess after listening to the audio. T plays the second listening audio. Ss guess and check their answers.

Post-Listening (18-20 minutes) • To give Ss a chance to practice speaking skills based on their understanding of the listening.

T illustrates what is required from Ss to discuss between each other. Ss have 5 minutes to make a few notes about a person they know well using the form presented. Ss will work in pairs in break-out rooms and ask each other some information about their person. Ss share what their peers shared with the larger group.
