This lesson builds on the previous lesson by continuing with the same context, manners in todays world. In listening part the focus is on how different nationalities can have different perception what are good and bad manners. This leads into an extended speaking activity where students discuss 'modern manners' and their relative importance in different situations.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in the skills of listening for gist and detail in the context of manners in today's world.

  • To provide practice in speaking fluency about modern manners and their importance in different situations


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-have the audio track ready to listen; 2 / 48 - have the video ready to watch SS watch 2 funny culture adds. After each short video students shortly discuss cultural differences. Instructions: - Watch videos and discuss in pairs. - What differences did you see? ICQ: What are we doing now? - Watching a video After the video finishes you are going to ... ( hand gesture for talking).

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Whiteboard: MIRANDA INGRAM ALEXANDER ANICHKIN (they are married) Where is Miranda from? Where is Alexander from? BRITISH manners RUSSIAN manners Instructions: Are there any differences? Try to guess with your partner. (give an example) You've got 2 minutes. ICQ: Will you be working alone? - No. As SS come up with ideas, they will stand up and write it on the whiteboard.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

SS listen to the audio and check their guesses. Instructions: - Work in pairs again! - What was their problem? - How have they managed to solve their differences? - You've got 2 minutes. ICQ: Are you going to talk about their problems and solutions? - Yes. How much time do you have? - 2 minutes

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

SS will be given T/F HO's. They will listen and answer. Instructions: First, read your statements fastly. Now listen carefully and answer with True or False. If the answer is False, correct it. ICQ: Are you working in pairs? - No. If the answer is false, are you going to correct it? - Yes. Peer check / Answer Key Regroup students by nominating them. Depends on the number of students, group them in 2 or 3 groups. Instructions: You'll be working in groups! Talk about Turkish manners. Are they similar to British or Russian manners? Write some examples on the whiteboard. You have got 3 minutes.

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- regroup SS so they sit facing each other (2 rows) - SS will be given a questionary Instructions: - Work in pairs. There are 5 subjects. You have to talk to 5 different student. 1 row starts from subject 1 to 5, the other row starts from subject 5 to 1 When T claps, 1 row changes the seats. ICQ: Are you going to work in pairs? - Yes. Are you going to talk to just one person? - No. Five students. This row, you start from subject number...? - 1 This row starts from subject number ....? - 5 And when I clap, you ....? - Move.
