Description

In this lesson, T is going to tell a story about an unsolved mystery as a lead in. Then Ss are going to listen the first part of an interview about the suspects for this mystery and complete the information about the suspects then they are going to listen the second part of the interview about the suspcts and they are going to mark the sentences T or F. Then T will present the grammar structure, question tags, through examples taken from the interview. The are going to listen the sentences and complete them with the missing words. this is followed by repetition drills for the intonation of question tags. Through CCQs, T is going to elicit the meaning and the function of the question tags. Ss are going to practice the structure through controlled practice. The lesson finishes with a role play in which question tags are used.

  • To present the grammar structure, question tags and help the Ss practice and proce it in the context of dialogues between a policeman and a suspect

Procedure

Warm up/ Lead in (5 minutes) • To set the context and rise Ss' attention for the lesson

T tells Ss the true story of the murderer, the Jack the Ripper. T writes on the WB ' one of the great unsolved murder mysteries of all time is that of Jack the Ripper'. T asks Ss whether they know about any unsolver murder mystery in Turkey. ( 1 minute/ WC discussion) The story: In 1888, a murderer killed many people in London. The victims were all women. The police couldn't stop the murders. Then one day, the murderer sent a letter to Scotland Yard. In the letter he promised to kill people again and it finished 'Jack the Ripper'. there was panic among Londoners. The murders continued and then they suddenly stopped. The police couldn't catch him. For along time, historians, writers, policemen, dedectives have tired to discover and find out his identiy. Hundreds of books and articles have been wirtten and many films made about the murders. who was Jack the Ripper?. there were a lot suspects. three years ago the American crime writer Partricia Cornwell tried to solve this mystery. she spent alot time and money analyzed DNA samples. Now Cornwell thinks that she has found out who Jack the Ripper was..'

Listening (5 minutes) • To provide Ss practice in Listening for the gist in the context of murder mystery of the Jack the Ripper.

T asks Ss to listen the recording and complete the information about the suspects and the tick the person who Patricia Cornwell says Jack the Ripper is. I: Listen to the first part of the interview with Ken Morton. complete the information about suspects and tick the person who Patricia Cornwell says is Jack the Ripper. While- Listening (10 minutes) • To provide Ss practice in Listening for specific details in the context of the murder mystery of Jack the Ripper

T asks Ss to listen and mark the sentences True or False and correct the false ones. (T may play the recording more then once if necessary) I: Listen to the second part of the listening and mark the sentences True or False. Correct the false one. T hands out the worksheets. Peer check Feedback on the WB.

Post Listening (10 minutes) • To present the grammar structure, question tags and practice Ss in the pronunciation of question tags.

Ss listen to the four question tags and complete them with the missing words. I: LÄ°sten to the questions of the interviewr and complete them with the missing words. T hands out the worksheets Feedback worksheets. CCQs: Does the interviever know how the inspector is going to answer? ( yes) ( 2 mns Ss discuss it in groups)

Grammar (5 minutes) • To practice the grammar structure through controlled practice in the context of the dialogue between a policemen and a suspect

Ss work in pairs and complete the dialogue with question tags. I: complete the dialogue between a policeman and a suspect. work in pairs. ( 3 mns) T hands out the worksheets Then Ss listen and check their answers.

Grammar (10 minutes) • To get the Ss produce the structure through role play in the context of a dialogue between a policeman and a suspect

Student A is a policeman, student B is a suspect. Policeman asks the suspect some questions and takes notes of the information about the suspect, then check the infomation by asking question tags. Then Ss change the roles and do the role play again. T monitors the students and takes notes of their mistakes for the feedback session at the end of the activity. T writes the mistakes on the wb and ask the class to correct them.
