Description

In this lesson students will practice skimming and scanning reading with the text about the beach. Later on they will work with the vocabulary activity based on filling in the missing words from the text. Lesson will end with a speaking activity related to learners' experience.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice for skimming and scanning reading in the context of beach.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review the meaning, form and pronunciation of the relevant vocabulary in the contexct of beach.

Procedure

Warmer (1-2 minutes) • To learn students' names

Good morning! How are you today? My name is Laura. Now I will try remember your names T says the names of Ss - the ones that T remembers Ss that were not mentioned introduce themselves.

Lead - in (2-3 minutes) • To set the lesson context and provide some speaking practice

"In the previous lesson you read about Alex, the guy who broke up with his girlfriend. So what did he do after the break up?" T elicits what S had read in the story. "Where do you think Alex is going now?" WC discussion T needs to elicit beach or Thailand.

Test 1 (4-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Chest HO1 These words are related to the beach. Match pictures with words. ICQ - will you work individually or in pairs? PW-check WCFB - match pictures with words on WB T makes notes about the words that Ss struggled the most with.

Pre-reading (vocab pre-teach) (4-5 minutes) • to clarify vocabulary necessary for the reading

As S in the previous activity have matched words with pictures, all the needed material is on the WB From previous activity will be clear which of the words T will need to clarify T checks pronunciation of all the words once. After that removes the words from the board that are known for the students and there is no problem with pronunciation and meaning. T drills the words that Ss have difficulty in pronouncing. Students might pronounce southern /ˈsʌð(ə)n/ similar to south /saʊθ/. Students might pronounce headland /ˈhɛdlənd/ similar to land /land/. T clarifies meaning of the words that are unclear for Ss with the help of a picture or CCQ Anticipated problems with meaning Southern – Teacher draws a map of Turkey and pretends to be a weather girl. “Tomorrow will be very rainy in the Southern Turkey”. T points to the map. Cove, lagoon and headland might be similar in meaning for Ss Use pictures Headland (noun [C], pl = headlands) - A narrow piece of land that projects from a coastline into the sea. Cove (noun [C], pl = coves) - A small sheltered bay. Lagoon (noun [C], pl = lagoons) - A stretch of salt water separated from the sea by a low sandbank or coral reef.

Pre-reading (prediction) (1-2 minutes) • to allow students to predict the context of the reading text

3 pictures on WB "About which beach do you think you will read soon?" Ss through WC discussion decide on one picture

While reading 1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide practice reading for gist by skimming the text

Chest HO2 read the text and choose the correct picture. ICQ - you will read and..... PW - check WCFB - Ss tell their answer

While reading 2 (7-8 minutes) • to practice scan reading by scanning the text

Ho3 Read the text again and decide are these sentences true or false. ICQ: will you read individually or in pairs? PW- check WCFB - ss write the answers on the board. T asks Ss to motivated their answers by reading the correct part of the text

Vocabulary test (9-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the related vocabulary

Ho4 complete the text using the words in the box. ICQ: Will you read and discuss the text? What will you do? PW - check WCFB - T elicits answers from Ss. T listens to pronunciation and if S make mistakes, at the end of FB T drills the words that are mispronounced by students T- which of these 2 pictures match the texts and why? --- at the beginning we had 3 pictures. 1 was used for the first reading text

post-reading task (9-10 minutes) • to practice productive skills - speaking

HO5 you have 6 questions. Please discuss them with your partner. Talk about Turkey. For example Q1 : The place in Turkey that is unspoilt. PW discussion T monitors and takes notes of mistakes WCFB - Ss present their answers to the WC Later, T gives feedback on the mistakes
