  • For students to practice reading.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expand vocabulary through a post- reading task.
  • Introducing the students some new vocabulary and practice these vocabulary through eliciting.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T greets students .-T enquires from students how long they have already been in Turkey and what they personally enjoy about living here. -Students to be invited to respond individually with a personal opinion. -T gets feedback from Ss and comments accordingly.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Students will watch a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRFkks3cFsY -T focuses on the title and explains/ elicits the meaning of foreigner (= a person from another country). -T models and drills pronunciation. - T tells students this is an article about foreigners who express their ideas about UK. - T makes sure Sts understand what they have to do before reading -Before Sts read the article the first time,T checks whether he/she needs to pre-teach any vocabulary.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-T now focuses on the instructions and makes sure Sts understand what they have to do. -T tells them that this is a real (adapted) article from a British newspaper. It is very motivating for Sts to realize that they can actually understand a newspaper article even at elementary level. -T gives Sts time to read the article and complete the task. - Ss try to answer exercise A first in pairs. - T monitors Ss in breakout rooms. -T checks answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-T tells sts they are going to read the article again and must complete each gap in 1–7 with a name. -T gives Sts time to read the article again and complete the task. -Then T gets them to compare with a partner, and checks answers. -T asks Sts if they have been to the UK and if so, T finds out if they agree with anything they read in the article.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- group mingle. -Students start talking about their reasons and positive/negative sides of the topic in their groups. -Ss will talk about whether they would like to live in a different place. They should say where they would like to go and why. -T leaves time for further class discussion to check whether the subject is clearly understood or not.
