Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss will develop the skill of fluency in speaking in the context of magic tricks.
  • Ss will develop also the skill of listening for specific information in the context of magic tricks.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will start his lesson trying to do a magic trick.T will ask the Ss if anyone of Ss can do a magic trick.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will ask the Ss to look at the photo of a magician on the WB .T will ask the Ss those questions (Do you know this trick?Do you believe that it is true? How the trick is done?Do you believe in magic?).T will elicit many answers from the Ss that will help in introducing the modals of speculation.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will highlight the answers that will be given by the Ss in which they used modal verbs such as (can't , might ,may , could ,could) .T elicits some sentences from the Ss about the grammar rule.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: T will draw a table with empty boxes trying to elicit from the Ss what modals should be used for "sure" and "unsure " cases on the WB such as the ones in (Handout 1).T will show that those modals can be used to talk about the future speculation. Some of the modals are used for not being sure of something and the others are used for speculations you are sure of. Form: T will discuss the form with the Ss (modal verb + infinitive) . Pronunciation: Then T moves to talk about the pronunciation . "Modals are not typically stressed in sentences. However , when you are speculating you can stress the modal to emphasize the speculative nature of what you are saying .When you say must be or can't be it's quite normal to drop the /t/ sound:/'m sbi/,/'Ka:nbi/ T will distribute among the Ss (Handout 2) which is for a listening practice.Ss will listen to recording (2.16) and will try to put the stress correctly on the words that should be stressed.Ss will discuss the answers with their pairs. After that T will discuss with the Ss the position of the stress in the sentence and how it affects the meaning.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will be given (Handout 3) to answer the questions in it individually first. Then Ss will be kindly asked to check the answers with their partners .The early finishers will come to the WB to write the answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T will distribute among the Ss handout 5 .Ss will work on it trying to write the answers for the questions individually first .Then they work in pairs to check their answers. At the end the feedback will be given to the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T divides the class into two groups ,A and B.T tells Ss that they are each are going to perform a magic trick to someone from the other group.T gives the Ss (Handout 4) that have the instructions for doing the tricks.Ss pair up with a student from the other group .Ss perform their magic trick to each other and their partner has to guess how the trick is done.T elicits from the Ss how they think the other group's trick was done.
