Procedure

Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

>Slide 1 What was the last party you went to? >Instructions: I am sending you to breakout rooms for 3 minutes. In BORs: 1. Tell your partner about the last party you went to. 2. Ask your partner follow up questions. • When was it? • What was the reason? • Who was there? • Where was the party? >ICQs: • What will you talk with your partner about? (The last party you went to) • What can you ask our partner about the party? (When, What, Who, Where) • How long do you have? (3 minutes) >Send to BORs >Broadcast instruction question: What was the last party you went to? > Bring back to group >Share screen. Slide 1. Can you see my screen? >Nominate 1-2 students to share the last party they went to. Who was your partner? What was the last party they went to? What was the last party you went to? When was it? Pre-Reading/Vocabulary (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

>Slide 2 In a minute we will be listening to an audio recording of people talking at a party. First, let’s review some vocabulary you will hear while listening. Here is a list of words that can be used to describe people and relationships. Can you tell me what part of speech are all these words? >CCQ: Are they verbs? Are they adjectives? > Click on box to make it disappear and reveal the word “NOUNS” Yes, they are all nouns. >Instructions: Match the noun (1-2) with the meaning (A-B). Type your answer in the chat. >ICQ: For example the first set, I think… 1. brother – matches to B. 2. husband – matches to A. So I will write into the chat: 1-B, 2-A. >ICQs: Can you see my answer in the chat? Do you agree with my answers? >CCQ: Am I married to my brother? Who am I married to? Who is my father’s son? Instructions: Now for the next set, you type your answer in the chat. 1 – A or B. 2 – A or B. >ICQ: Where do you type your answer? (in the chat) Who do you send it to? (to everyone) Now you try. 1. neighbor – A. 2. boss – B. >CCQ: Does my neighbor live near or far? While-Listening #1 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

>Slide 3 >Send link to Handout 1 Instructions: I am sending you a link to a handout in the chat. Open it. >ICQs: Do you have the Handout 1 open? What does it say at the top of the page? Instructions: In a minute we are going to listen to an audio recording. We will listen to the audio one time and you will listen for a general understanding. First, Look at these photos A-C. Then you will listen. Then you will choose the correct words. You will underline or mark the correct word in Handout 1. Let’s read the sentences before we listen. 1. Matt is Carol’s brother/husband. 2. Natalia is from Spain/Brazil. 3. Ben works with Matt/Carol. 4. Jackie is Matt and Carol’s neighbor/boss. 5. Liam is a lawyer/an accountant. 6. Amy is Carol’s sister/cousin. Are you ready to listen? Do you have Handout 1 open? What are you going to do when you know the correct word? (Yes, underline or mark) > Instructions: Now I will play the audio for one second and you tell me if you can hear the audio. >Play 1-2 seconds of audio, pause. Can you hear it? Instruction: Now listen 1 time. > Play entire audio (2:41) Instruction: Now write mark the correct words in Handout 1. After, we will discuss the answers in pairs. >Wait 1 minute. Finished? While-Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

>Slide 5 >Send link to Handout 2. >Instructions: I am sending a link to a new handout in the chat. Open it. >ICQs: Do you have Handout 2 open? What does it say at the top of the page? >Instructions: Now we are going to listen to the same audio again, this time for more detail. After we listen we will choose true or false for each sentence. Mark your answer on your handout. You will check your answers in pairs. Then we will listen to the audio one more time. >ICQs: How many times will we listen to the audio? (2x) Where will you mark your answers? (on handout) Let’s read the sentences now. >Read sentences. >Instructions: Now we will listen. After you listen, you will mark on Handout 2 true or false. >ICQ: Where will you mark true or false? Ok let’s listen. >Play audio. (2:41) Now mark the sentence true or false in Handout 2. Finished? Pair-work >Instruction: Now let’s discuss your answers with your partners. (No) • If you like meeting strangers, Are you shy or are you confident? • What are some things you can talk about with a stranger? (Where are you from? Where do you work?)
