Description

In this lesson, students practice and revise the grammar rules around “there is/there are”/ “there isn’t”/ “there aren’t”. Students will start with a lead-in that will set context followed by a MFPA. Students will get a chance to test the knowledge out in a controlled practice. The class will allow students to talk in free practice. The class will end with a DEC.

Main Aims

  • Increase student lexis around places in town.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Prior to sharing the lead-in, T. will build rapport with Ss. & T. will share with Ss. the aim of the lesson. (1 min) T. will share on Zoom a Google Slide. Google slide has two images. The questions are: Which city do you live in? What is there to do in your city?(3 min PW)

Exposure (Text work [gist]) (2-3 minutes) • To introduce the TL to Ss.

T. will share on Zoom screen of a small write up that has the TL language. Ss. will be given one minute to read the text. (1 min IW) Ss. will be asked CCQs about the text to ensure understanding and highlight TL. (2 min)

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T. shares a link to Google Slides on Zoom chat where Ss. will see four sentences. Ss. are asked to decide in OC which meaning is for which sentence. (2 min) T. will ask Ss. to work in pairs and to move the correct part of speech of the sentence under the appropriate word of the sentence. (2 min PW) T. will go over the answers with the class in OCFB. (2 min) T. will go over contraction of there is and there aren’t in OC ( 2 min) T. will ask students to pronounce the TL. T. will model and drill. (2 min). T. will share the appropriacy of there is and there’s with class through a visual. (2 min)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. will share Google slide on Zoom chat and assign slides to Ss. Ss. will be asked to fill in the blanks individually. (5 min IW) T. will ask Ss. to go over their work with classmates. (3 min PW) T. will go over the answers with Ss. in OCFB (2 min)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T. will share a Google Slides link on Zoom for Ss.and ask them to speak about their neighbourhood. They should each take turns in name 4 things they have and 4 things they don’t have. (4 min PW) T. will engage the class in OCFB and DEC through Google Slides. ( 3 min)
