Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Annie Griffiths in the context of her life as a professional photographer.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of five vocabulary words in the context of the life of a professional photographer.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Using OH, project photos of photographers at work. Ask Ss use one word to respond to the photo. Who likes photography? Who is a photographer? Do you like to take pictures? Elicit the topic of the lesson: working as a photographer.

Vocabulary Activity (5-6 minutes) • To clarify vocab that is essential for the listening/reading activities.

Make enlarged cutouts of each paragraph from Ex. B and post them around the room. Ss are given a list of vocab words. Ss walk around the room, reading the paragraphs and match one word to each paragraph. Get FB and clarify problem areas. Check part of speech. Drill Pronunciation.

Pre-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Project the photo of Annie Griffiths. Working in pairs and one group of three, think about the topic of Annie's talk. Discuss in pairs/groups. Monitor Ss and make notes of errors. Give FB if necessary.

While-Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Present Ss with three possible main ideas for the listening exercise. Give Ss one minute to read and understand. Instruct Ss to listen for the main idea. Play audio track. Have Ss discuss their ideas as a group. Get FB and clarify.

While-Listening #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Present Ss with questions for detailed listening exercise B. Give them 1-2 minutes to read and understand. Instruct Ss to listen for these details and answer questions. Following, have them check answers with partner/group. Get FB/Clarify.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Think about what you heard. Check of the statements are T or F. Correct False statements. Work individually. Check/Discuss in pairs/group. Monitor, get FB, and clarify.

Post-Listening/Semi-Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To reflect on learned material and to practice speaking in a semi-controlled context

Split class into two groups. Instruct Ss to discuss their given prompt together. Give one group prompt 1, and the other prompt 2. Set Ss to task. Monitor and make notes of errors. Give FB.
