Description

In this lesson, students practice and revise functional language to show interest. Students will start with a lead-in that will set context followed by a reading gist task that will give students some more context and touch on the TL. Next, the MFP focus on the TL. Students will then be given a CP followed by a free practice. The free practice will be monitored and DEC will be given at the end.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Increase student lexis around how to react to good or bad news. In addition to this, what to say when not surprised.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Prior to sharing the lead-in, T. will build rapport with Ss & T. will share with Ss the aim of the lesson. (1 min) T. will share on Zoom a Google Slide. Google slide has two images and a conversation starter. Students are asked to speak in breakout rooms regarding the question. The question is: What do you think the reaction of the man and woman would be? What would they say? (3 min PW)

Exposure (Text work [gist]) (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T. will share the Google Slide screen on Zoom. T. will have two conversations A and B. T. will ask students to read the conversation for one minute and answer who responded appropriately. (1 min) T. will put Ss. in breakout rooms to go over their answers with their peers (1 min) T. will ask Ss. to share their answers in OCFB. (2 min)

Clarification (12-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T. will share Google Slide link and assign Slides to each student. Ss. will be asked to place the reactions under the appropriate headings individually. . (2 IW). T. will ask Ss, to into breakout rooms and compare answers. (2 min PW) T. will then ask Ss. to share answers in OCFB. (2 min) T. will ask Ss. in open class to share where they feel the words go in a visual. One end is very formal and the other being informal (3min) T. will ask students individually to read the responses out loud and correct pronunciation and highlight intonation through drilling. (3 min)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. will share Google slides and assign slides to individual students. Ss. will be asked to do the task work individually. (4 min IW) Ss. will be put in breakout rooms to go over their answers. (3 min PW) T. will go over the answers in OCFB. (3 min)

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T. will share Google slides on Zoom share and assign students numbers 1 and 2. Students will be asked to ask questions and give appropriate responses. T. will monitor breakout rooms. (5 min PW) T. will ask questions in OCFB and on Google Slide engage in DEC. (3 min)
