Description

In this lesson students will practice listening for gist and listening for detail in the context of shopping. Beforehand, they will practice some vocabulary about people, types of shopping, and places to go shopping to have general view of the lesson. The session will be finished in a short conversation in pairs about a shopaholic person. Feedback will be provided by the teacher during each stage on content and the words.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a group discussion in the context of shopping
  • Students will be introduced to and practice some vocabulary items about places to go shopping, and types of shopping

Procedure

Warmer (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets the class and elicits what is the most favorite thing to do for women. T reminds SS of their lesson with Erica yesterday about shopping.

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate SS' interest in the topic and to set the context

SS talk together about the Qs on the cards in pairs. How often do you go shopping? Where do you usually go shopping? What do you usually buy? ICQs T monitors. When finished T provides FB on content.

Pre-teaching vocabulary #1 (4-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the vocabulary items

T writes People, types of shopping and places to go shopping on the board. T elicits online shopping and asks SS which category it belongs to. After the demo, SS are given the envelops including words and 3 topics. In new pairs they put the words under the correct topic. ICQs. T monitors. SS compare their answers with another pair. SS are asked to put the correct answers on the board. T provides FB.

Feedback (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of difficult words

T selects the difficult words from the previous activity and conveys the meaning. T shows the picture and asks CCQs. T explains the other words. T highlights the pronunciation and stress of the words. SS repeat the words in the class and individually.

Pre-teaching vocabulary #2 (5-7 minutes) • To check students' use of the words again

SS are given the quiz. T mentions not to worry about the answers. Just fill the gaps with the words on the board. ICQs. T sets the time and monitors. SS compare the answers together in pairs. T provides FB and practices the pronunciation. SS are asked to answer the quiz about them. Then SS mingle and compare their answer. T monitors and provides FB on content. Did you find anyone most similar to you?

Listening for gist (3-5 minutes) • For SS to practice listening for gist and get prepared for the listning

T elicits the words interviewer and interviewee from the picture. T introduces the tasks and write the Qs on the board. What are they talking about? Is she interested in the topic? SS listen and compare the answers with one another. T provides FB and gives the correct answers.

Listening for detail (6-8 minutes) • For SS to practice listening more carefully for detailed information

T introduces the task before giving out the HO. SS have some time to read the Qs and guess the answers. SS sit in two groups and listen again. ICQs. T monitors students. T regroups SS to check their answers in new pairs. If necessary, SS listen once more. T monitors and take notes of SS' mistakes unobtrusively. Correct answers are put on the wall. SS are given FB.

Post-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide SS with an opportunity to speak freely in groups

SS work in new pairs A and B. They make up a short conversation bet. Katy and one of her friends who wants to give her some advice about her shopping addiction. ICQs. T monitors and takes notes of SS' mistakes. Content FB is provided.

Delayed error feedback (2-4 minutes) • For SS to notice their own mistakes and get feedback

T puts SS' errors on the board and the class correct form/pronunciation. T thanks the class goodbye.
