Main Aims

  • To practice and revise functional language to discuss ambitions and achievements

Subsidiary Aims

  • Understand MAFP of TL and practice it in the freer practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets the Ss and asks them to open a Google Slides sheet. Teacher sets the context of the lesson (Ambitions and Achievements) by showing two images and asking the learners to brainstorm based on that. Teacher elicits ideas from the Ss in order for them to guess the topic of the lesson. Gist Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher asks the Ss to move on to slide number 2 and to read a short text about ambitions, achievements and dreams of different people. After the reading they will be asked to link the name of the person to the picture representing their ambition/achievement/dream. During this task Teacher will ask each student to link the pictures to a person.

MAFP (10-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students move onto Slide #4 and Teacher covers meaning of TL. Ss look at 4 sentences and decide whether they refer to an achievement or to an ambition. Then they are sent to BR to share their answers to a peer. Follows OCFB. Then Teacher elicits from students the meaning of the TL. Ambition: Something you want to do one day Achievement: something you have done that you are proud of --------------- Students move onto slide 5 and Teacher highlights appropriacy of TL. Ss look at 4 sentences again and are asked to tell whether those express a positive or a negative meaning. Then they are asked about the level of formality of the sentences.

Controlled Practice + form (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher uses a controlled practice (https://forms.gle/GpyUAUHXuCxrzgTM9) on Google Forms to test the Ss' previous knowledge of the form of the TL. This consists of multiple-choice question regarding the right verb to use after the fixed part of the TL. Follows an explanation of the TL's form. When do we use the gerund (ing) and when do we use the simple past.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher shows a question on Google Slides: Can you share to a peer at least one achievement and one ambition of yours? And asks the students to discuss this in BR. (5 mins approx.) Follows DEC
