Review of tenses, simple past , present perfect, present perfect continous

Description

In this lesson, students review tenses such as simple past,present perfect and continuous through a guided discovery on some sentences written about two famous footballers. The lesson starts with a matching activity about Messy and Maradona and later discusses the use and tense of the verbs. This is followed by some controlled gap-filling practice. After that,students are given some examples about present perfect vs continuous to distinguish them better. Then, there is a controlled practice. Finally, there is a free practice via a speaking activity focused on students' favorite famous person to encourage them to use tenses discussed in the lesson.

Main Aims

  • For students to review and practice past simple ,present perfect simple and continuous in the context of Famous people's lives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • For students to practice speaking about their favorite famous person's life using right tenses.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows two photos to Ss about two famous footballers from Argentina asks Ss to think about them Ss are given 3 minutes to tell each other what they know about the them.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation

T shows Ss some sentences and asks them to find out who the sentences refer to individually. T asks Ss to check the answers in pairs or groups. Answers are checked in the class and Ss are asked to read the sentences and replace the pronouns with the correct name. T asks students to read the sentences With correct stress.

Highlighting (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks students to put the Ss in two columns present perfect and simple past. T asks some CCQs on the different uses of the two tenses.

Controlled practice (4-5 minutes) • To give students and opportunity to use the target language

T gives Ss some gap-filling sentences to practice Simple past and present perfect. Ss do the task individually and then check with partners.

Highlighting /Present (8-10 minutes) • Tp point out the differences between present perfect simple and present perfect continuous

T shows Ss some pictures in which T tries to focus on the differences btw present perfect simple and present perfect continuous . T elicits from Ss the reasons behind these differences.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T asks Ss to underline the correct words. T checks the answers with the Ss and asks some CCQs.

Free Practice (4-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks Ss to choose a famous person and tell their partner(s) about his/her life Ss need to talk about things he or she did, has done , has been doing.

Flex-stage (4-6 minutes) • To draw Ss attention to state verbs and provide Ss with more semi-controlled practice

T gives Ss a short text. Ss have to read and find incorrect continuous verbs. T asks a S to read the sentences with the correct form of the verbs. T gives Ss a WS to match the sentences halves. Ss do them individually and check with partners.
