Description

In this lesson, the students learn the techniques of gist and detailed reading of the text, completing the tasks related to the text and fluent speaking on the topic of classical music and biography of a famous pianist. The lesson starts with a discussion about music and different musical genres to build the rapport with the students. This is followed by gist reading of the text and matching the paragraphes to the given statements. The second task is detailed reading of the text and editing true and false questions. Finally there is a discussion of the topic related to the text via a speaking activity.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of classical music and perfomances of the famous musician Joao Carlos Martins

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To listen to a small part of Joao Carlos Martins' performance while waiting for all the students to join the class To ask the students questions related to the topic "Music" such as: What kind of music do you like? What is your favorite musical genre? How many musical genres do you know? etc.

Pre-teaching vocabulary (5-5 minutes) • to be aware of words

to explain 4 verbs from the text and to give some examples 1. To stop V-ing (something) But when he was in his late twenties, he had to stop playing the piano after he broke his arm very badly while playing soccer. 2. While-Reading (7-7 minutes) • to complete the first task and to check it in pairs

after gist reading the text to match the paragraphes to the statements, then in breakout rooms to discuss the answers with the partner(s). After completing and checking the task to nominate 4 students to tell the answers in the group.

While-Reading (10-10 minutes) • To read the text again for detail and to complete more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

To read the text again and to write if the statement is true or false, if it is false to make it correct. Then in breakout rooms to discuss the answers with the partner(s). After completing and checking the task to nominate 5 students to tell the answers in group. 1. Joao Carlos Martins’ success lies through a thorny path. 2. He learned to play the piano when he was a teenager. 3. Joao Carlos Martins broke his arm twice. 4. He didn’t like to be a politician. 5. Joao Carlos Martins is still performing concerts as a conductor.

Post-Reading (10-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to use the vocabulary used in the text and expand on what they've learned

To tell the peers about your favorite musician. It can be a Mexican musician or a musical band of any other country. To ask the students to try to make the peers believe that this is the best musician in the world so after the class we will find and turn on this musician’s songs.
