Description

This is a reading lesson where students will read for gist and more details in the context of shopping. T will play a quick hang-man type game with Ss to elicit from them what the lesson is going to be about and to just wait for any late comers. T will pre-teach a few vocabulary and pronunciation words. Ss will do a quick gist-reading exercise for pre-reading. The first while-reading exercise will be the text cut up that they have to reorder to make them more aware of the content of the text. The next while-reading exercise will be multiple choice questions and then the post-reading will be group discussions of the questions in Exercise 3 and Ss to have a small competition about the points discussed.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with the opportunity to read for gist and comprehension to further their knowledge in the context of shopping.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with new vocabulary and pronunciation and also an opportunity for speaking at the end of the lesson to produce what they've learned from the receptive skilled lesson.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T play a hangman-like game with them to elicit what the lesson is going to be about and also to wait for late comers. Pre-Teach vocabulary and pronunciation words coming up in the text that they might not know. Refer to Language Analysis page for details of this please.

Pre-Reading (0-1 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will give Ss Reading Exercise 1 to read the question quickly. This should take about 10 seconds for them. Then T will give the Reading text, they will have half a minute to quickly find the answers to the questions to get the gist idea for the full reading. Directly after half a minute T will elicit the answer from Ss. T will take all the text back from them to use after the next stage.

While-Reading #1 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss will receive the reading text cut up. They will reorder the text in pairs again. When they have finished they will receive HO 1 (the original reading text) back to check their work.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss will receive HO 5 which is a comprehension exercise to look for more detail in the text. Ss will work individually on this exercise. After completion of the task T will give them the answer key.

Post-Reading (15-17 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will regroup Ss into 2 groups this time for this exercise. Ss will receive HO7 to discuss the questions in their groups. The have to discuss the second question first as the other 2 will be used for small competitions. As a competition between the two groups they can see who can find the most differences between a British and Turkish shopping basket just by using what is in the reading as they won't really know what is in Britain and what is not. They will have 5 min to do this and then we will see who has the most ideas. They can have another short competition to see which group can think of the most things that will be in a shopping basket in 20 years' time. Another 5 or 6 minutes before we will check on these answer to find the winning group.
