Students will learn collocations in the context of "modern and traditional", through guided discovery based on a reading text.The lesson starts with a discussion between modern and traditional things. SS read a text about the context and answer a few questions. Controlled practice, through reassembling a cut up text and free practice, where Ss have t choose some items and answer some questions using those TL items.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of collocation items in the context of modern and traditional settings.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about a TV show set in 1900 in the context of modern and traditional.


Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss a G. Jamboard with some pictures, and has them predicting what will the lesson be about. Ss are asked what they prefer between modern and traditional things and are then put into breakout rooms where they have to discuss that in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shares screen of a Task where Ss are instructed they have to read a conversation between two people and answer a series of questions individually. T shares the link with Ss in the chat box as students complete the task. T has Ss comparing answers in pairs via private messages. T check answers with the whole group nominating Ss. (OCFB)

Clarification (9-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shares screen of G. Slides with Ss. He goes over M,F,P,A, by using CCQs, eliciting answers with examples and using drilling for pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shares a G. sites documents of a task in which students have to put the paragraphs in the right order. T instructs Ss on how to complete the task. T shares link with Ss in the chat box, as students work on the task individually. Ss will check their answers in pairs, via private messages. T checks answers with the whole group (OCFB)

Free Practice + Feedback & DEC (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language, gives feedback and error correction.

T does a demo for this exercise, then types 4 pairs of collocations in the chat box. Ss get instructed they have to discuss and choose which item they prefer and why. Ss. have to complete the task in breakout rooms, while T monitors them. T will nominate Ss to share their classmates' or their own choices. T exposes mistakes heard during the follow up and elicits correction from Ss.
