Description

In this lesson, students learn to talk about living and working. The lesson starts with a review of common verbs (go, live, work) and nouns. This is followed by reading and understanding texts describing people's life and work in different parts of the world.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and review the vocabulary from the previous lesson

1 Greet the Ss and ask them 'How are you?' 2 Play 'Guess who...?' game to review common verbs go, work, live. Use famous people/teacher pictures. T reads short sentences about the famous person and asks each of the 3 groups to guess the name. (Erdoğan-Muslera- Angela) A) I live in Ankara - I work for Turkish people - I go to work by helicopter B) I live in Florya - I go to work by car - I work for Galatasaray C) I live in Bahçeşehir - I work for ITI - I go to work by bus)

STAGE 1: Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1 (Eliciting from a picture). T asks ss to look at the pictures (Straightforward Beginner Student’s Book, page 42-43). T asks many questions and gives ss time to reply. After each answer, T asks new questions. 'What can you see? Who are they? Is it a woman or a man? 1 woman or 2? Tell him/her: this is a woman. Is she happy? What is her/his nationality? Where does she/he work? What is her job? 2 T places the picture on the WB and asks ss to help her write the main ideas about the picture: 2 men, 2 women, happy, young,

STAGE 2: While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

1 Ss read the text silently for 3 minutes.(Straightforward Beginner Student’s Book, page 42) 2 Ss match the texts 1-3 to the pictures A-C (PW) (HO exercise). Ss check their answers in pairs. T asks why is it her/him? 3 T asks the ss to read the text again and answer true /false questions (GW) (HO exercise 2) T checks that ss understand every step of the activity. T varies feedback modality

STAGE 3: While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging tasks about the text

1 Ss read 1 set of questions about the text in turns, the others answer looking for the information in the text. (GW) SET 1: Where does Keith live? Where does he work? Does he go to work by train? SET 2: Where does Charri work? Where is Charry from? Does she go to work on foot? SET 3: Where do Tom and Christine work? Are they teachers? Do they live in Mexico? 2 T monitors without interfering, takes note of the mistakes and asks Ss to correct them.

STAGE 4: Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practise the language they've learned

1 Ss look at the different types of questions (post-reading HO ex 1), ask questions and check their answers with their partners (PW). Teacher gives FB on the board 2 Ss find someone who...? Ss ask and answer questions related to themselves (post-reading HO ex 2) Tmonitors and takes notes of the errors. If time, T writes the errors on the board and gives FB
