Copy of Grammar - Second conditional
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, ss learn about the second conditional through guided discovery based on a reading text based on The People Watchers. The lesson starts with a quick reminder video of The People Watchers from the previous lesson. T clarifies the form using a marker from the text and then drills question, fast spoken positive and negative forms. After a couple of controlled gap-filling activities, a semi-controlled "complete the sentences" and a discussion follows. T does a delayed error correction if necessary. T finalizes the session with a freer discussion.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of second conditional in the context of a written review about The People Watchers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a dialogue by using second conditionals
  • To familiarize ss with the second conditional through reading

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a quick reminder of The People Watchers from the previous lesson and asks ss to think about how careful they are in their everyday life. Ss discuss in pairs. No feedback is given in this part.

Stage 1 - exposure & second conditional clarification (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

T gives a text that contains a number of underlined sentences and asks the students to discuss why the reviewer likes the programme in pairs. T does a quick feedback and then draws their attention to the underlined sentences and elicits responses to CCQs to clarify the second conditional. T asks ss to unfold the paper and fill in the blanks individually. Ss compare their answers in pairs. T gives W/C feedback if necessary.

Stage 2 - clarification of the form, and pronunciation & controlled practice (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the form and pronunciation of the target language

T uses a marker sentence from the text, elicits responses for the form and then clarifies it on the board. T drills each item along with contractions. T gives a folded handout that contains a couple of gap-filling activities, both of which are aimed at practising the tenses used in the second conditional. After having ss compare their answers in pairs in each step, T either gives the answer key for the former gap-fill or nominates a ss' AK to serve as one, and then provides W/C feedback for the latter.

Stage 3 - semi-controlled & freer practice (15-20 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for freer practice

T gives a folded handout of eight sentences to be completed about their classmates in a mingling activity. When the mingling is over, T regroups ss and then asks them to report the information they have gathered to their partners. T monitors closely to make sure that the target language is used correctly. T provides feedback if necessary. The other part of the handout consists of eight questions to be discussed in pairs. This part is intended to start a whole class discussion after T asks ss which of the dilemmas were the most difficult for them. T takes notes for delayed feedback and then provides it if necessary. T introduces the freer discussion activity by asking "If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?" No feedback given or correction made after this part.
