Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the present perfect, and contrast it with the past simple, in the context of describing places. Students will also be enabled to practice listening and speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review of the present perfect, and to clarify the contrast between the present perfect and the past simple, in the context of describing places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to practice their listening and speaking skills in the context of describing places.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets Ss and welcomes them to class. [Title slide] T shows images of Zurich and Copenhagen [slide 2] and asks Ss: - What can we see in these two photos? - What do the cities have in common? - Do you know where these cities might be? - Have you ever been to Zurich or Copenhagen? [nominates Ss]

Pre-Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible.

T gets Ss attention. T: We’re going to listen to a recording of two travel writers, Gus and Maria, talking about the two cities. But before we do, let’s read what a style magazine said about Copenhagen and Zurich when it voted them the top two cities in the world to live in. T: I’m going to send you a link to a Google Form in the chat. Let’s work together to read the text and answer the questions. Link: https://forms.gle/dtAiSRRitgaJGLr47 T: Nominates S to read the first text. T: Nominates S to read the second text. T: Nominates Ss to answer the Qs. [Answer key: 1. b) the environment 2. a) transport 3. b) great natural setting] T: Great! Now let’s have a listen to the audio.

While-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks.

T: Okay! I’m going to play you the audio twice. Gist task: The first time we listen to it, I would like you to answer the following questions: Which city are they each talking about? Are they generally positive or negative? Which person has visited the city already? T plays audio, Ss answer Qs. T nominates Ss to share their answers. T shares screen with answer key. Detail task: Now let’s listen again. This time you will be answering a series of short answer questions. After we listen to the audio, we will have 3 minutes to compare our answers with our partners. You can answer the Qs while you listen, then we’ll go to the channels to compare your answers with a partner for 3 minutes. ICQ: Are we going to be answering the questions while we listen? Guided Discovery/Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T: Okay! Now let’s return to the PRESENT PERFECT that you were learning yesterday. Today we will review it, and contrast it with the PAST SIMPLE. T: I’m going to send you a link to an exercise in the chat. LINK: https://forms.gle/TVQxwUyj3NVVVpxh7 T: You will be working in teams/partners [depending on # of Ss] in the channels to complete the questions. You will have 4 minutes, and then we will come back to the general session to go over the answers. ICQ: Are we answering them individually? Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T: Great! Now let’s look at some present perfect questions. We will work as a group to match them with their past simple follow up question. I will send you a link in the chat to a Jamboard. Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T: Okay! Now you will work in pairs to ask and answer the questions. Then, ask two more follow-up questions. We will have 8 minutes to talk with our partners. ICQ: Are we going to be writing? [no, we’re asking and answering questions] ICQ: Are we working with a partner? [yes] T send Ss to channels T monitors channels and notes good language and reformulations for feedback/DEC.

Feedback and DEC (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback and delayed error correction.

T calls Ss back to the main session. T addresses good language and errors noted while monitoring in channels and elicits Ss to share some of their conversations. T thanks Ss for their time and their hard work and says goodbye :)
