Description

In this lesson, the students practice past simple vs past continuous in the context of a conversation between two friends.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable the students to practice past simple vs past continuous in the context of a conversation between two friends

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable the students to practice reading for gist and detail.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows a picture that is symbolic of this lesson's topic. The teacher asks the students: "Do you get upset when you are interrupted?" The students share their ideas with the class. The teacher asks the students: "When was the last time you couldn’t finish an activity because you were interrupted?" The students share their ideas with the class.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher shows the students a slide with one conversation between two friends. The teacher tells the students: "You have 2 minutes to, individually, read this conversation quickly to get the general idea of it." "Then, you will tell me what the conversation is about." Individually, the students read the conversation. The teacher asks the students: "What is the conversation about in broad strokes?" The students share their answers with the class. The teacher confirms the students' answers.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher shows the students two slides: one with an exercise to cover Meaning and the other with an exercise to cover Form. The teacher reads the instructions of both exercises together with the students and then the teachers tells the students: "Now, I will send you to Breakout Rooms and you have 4 minutes to answer these two exercises we have just read on slides 4 and 5." "What slides do you have to answer?" "Here we go." In Breakout Rooms, the students answer the exercises in pairs. Once the students are back, they share their answers with the class. The teacher confirms the students' answers. The teacher uses IPA symbols to show the students correct pronunciation. The teacher models and drills the sentences.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In the chat, the teacher shares a Google Form with the students. The teacher tells the students: "You have 5 minutes to, individually, read the conversation again, this time carefully, and answer the questions in the Google Form." Individually, the students do the exercise. The students share their answers with the class. The teacher confirms the students' answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher shows the students a picture. The teacher tells the students: "I will send you to Breakout Rooms and you have 8 minutes to talk about the picture." "Don't forget to practice using past simple and past continuous in your description." In Breakout Rooms, the students talk about the picture. The teacher goes from room to room to monitor the speaking task and write down some notes about the language the students are using.

Feedback and Error Correction (5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

The teacher asks some students: "What did your partner tell you about the picture?" Those students share their partner's ideas with the class. After hearing the students, the teacher points out, on a slide, certain mistakes the students made during the Free Practice stage. The teacher elicits the correct use of the corresponding language from the students, asking: "Is this correct?" "How do you say it correctly?"
