Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about clothes in the context of shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- show ss some clothes items like a jumper, t-shirt, shirt, socks. - explain to them what we mean by" pair of socks-shoes.." - elicit from them the reading topic which is " clothes and shopping" - ask them to answer these 4 questions 1- what are you wearing now? 2- Do you like shopping? 3- what do you usually buy when you go shopping? 4- do you think what we wear is important? How? -monitor and help ss if they face any difficulty in answering any question. - ask 2 or 3 ss about their opinions.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

show them photos for these 5 words 1- show them a picture of a dress designed by a famous designer and worn by an actress in the Gouna festival and elicit from them the word " designer clothes" 2- ask them this question " can anybody wear designer clothes? ss will say no then you ask why? so you elicit from them the word "expensive" 3- show them a picture of a person who is wearing formal clothes. ask ss " Is he a teacher?" and "where does he work?" and elicit from them the word "sales manager" 4- show ss a picture of a famous fashion magazine and ask the " what is this? or is it a newspaper?" and elicit the word "fashion magazines" 5- show ss 2 pictures. one is real and the other is online and elicit "online shopping"

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- set the context and tell the ss that the reading passage is about three people who are expressing their opinions on the lead in question " do you think what you wear is important?" - stick the pictures of the 3 people on the board. - cut the reading passage into 3 parts and put them around the room. - ask ss to walk around and match the parts with the pictures on the board. - demonstrate with the class by doing the first one together. - ask them some ICQs like " do you have to understand each word?" and mime reading quickly to make them understand what you want them to do exactly. - ask them to check in pairs then the whole class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- ask them to read again and answer ex:a7. - demonstrate and answer the first one with them. - mime how you want them to read (quickly or slowly). use your hands to show them that they have to pick up a piece of information from the text. - check in pairs and then show the answer key on the projector.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- ask them to talk about their clothes. -demonstrate and point at your shirt and say " this is my shirt. it is from Zara. it is 40 pounds. I like it because it is cheap" - write on the board some hints to help them like " this is my .......", " it 's from........", it's .........pounds, and I like it because it's ........... - put 10 question stripes in a cup and ask ss to answer them. - write some hints to help them again. - give ss feedback and make sure you write as good as bad points.

flexi stage (3-5 minutes) • to extend the ss speaking time

-ask ss to talk about what their family usually wear at work, at the gym, at school..
