The human animal-Listening and speaking
Upper-intermediate level


In this lesson, students learn about some and any through guided discovery based on a listening text ritual and customs . The lesson starts with three question asked by the teacher to the whole class. This is followed by listening a DVD for gist . Then, they will watch the video again for detailed information ,a gap fill activity through listening is done to pass on listening for gist,. After they watch the DVD again they have to answer five questions for more specific listening .Finally they will work in pairs and discuss some gestures which would be important for a visitor to their country to know about


Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand a listening text DVD in the context of a ritual and human behaviour, listening for gist and detailed information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to discuss and talk about some gestures in Turkey "speaking skill". To provide fluency speaking practice in a group work activity .


Lead in (5-8 minutes) • To raise students' interest in the topic

Teacher will ask students some questions about ritual in Turkey.I will raise their interest in the topic which .Then the teacher will ask students some questions in terms of behaviour .1- What kind of ritual can you see in each photo?2- How well do you think the people know each other?3- Do you do anything similar in your country?

Pre-teaching vocabulary (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the video and make it accessible.

Teacher will elicit some vocabulary relating to the gist and specific information questions using some pictures Students will work in pairs to know about the topic and know the new vocabulary .How many different ways of shaking hands do you know?How do you express “you’re crazy” ?

While watching the video (5-6 minutes) • While Listening Listen for gist to get a general idea and answer three questions

The task before listening for gist will be answering two questions:How many different ways of shaking hands do you know?How do you express “you’re crazy” ? .Then I will play the DVD and the students will complete each sentence with a number

While Listening (6-8 minutes) • Students will listen again for specific information

To provide students with more challenging detailed reading for specific information. They have to read eight questions, first before I play the DVD, They have to listen again and answer the questions .I will tell them if you need to stop the video ell me loudly stop to give them enough time for writing the answer.After they finish, I will check their answers in pairs and I will take feedback from the whole class.

Post listening task (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language, provide them with an opportunity to respond to the audio and expand on what they've learned in a speaking activity

Teacher will ask students to answer questions to be asked with your partner .Teacher will tell students about a personal ritual of his own . Students will answer the questions and check in pairs after that they will ask speak during a discussion .Work in pairs and discuss the questions. 1- Do you have any customs or rituals that are particular to your family or that are typical in your culture? Think about holidays, birthdays, particular days of the week, food and drink.
