Writing Lesson
Pre-intermediate A2/B1 level

Description

In this lesson, students will practice their writing skills by writing a text about a trip that they have made. The lesson starts with a discussion about the places they have visited and what they enjoyed about them. Then, students are going to read a Model text about a trip to London. Next, students will identify the Layout by matching the paragraphs to the information that they present. After clarifying MF of the TL (linkers: so, because, then and but), students will have a brainstorm to share ideas about their trips. This will prepare them to write their own narratives. Finally, they will have FB in pairs, checking their pieces of writing

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing skills by writing a narrative about the trips students have made, using the linkers so, because, but and then

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of reading for gist and to teach students how to provide FB by pair checking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lesson starts with a discussion about the places they have visited and what they enjoyed about these places. Teacher will instruct: Think about a trip that you have made Where did you go? What interesting places did you visit? Students will discuss for 2 minutes in the breakout rooms After this, there will be a brief OCFB

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Students are going to read a Model text called My trip to London. Next, students will identify the Layout by matching the paragraphs to the information that they present. Here the activity 1) The first time I visited another country was when I went to London. It was 6 years ago and I went with three friends. The plane was very expensive, so we decided to travel by bus. The journey to London took about sixteen hours, but we were very excited because for all of us it was our first time away from home. 2) We stayed in London for three days in a hotel not far from the center. While we were there we walked a lot. First, we went to see all the famous sites –Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace---, then we went shopping in Oxford street. On the last morning, my friends stayed in bed late, but I got up and went to Camden Market. You can buy all kinds of jewelry and clothes there, and I bought a silver ring for my sister. It was really hot and sunny in the afternoon, so we went to Hyde Park for a game of football. Unfortunately, I think the ring fell out of my pocket during the game, because I couldn’t find it when I got on the bus that evening.   3) I’ve been back to London several times since then, but I don’t think I’ll ever feel as excited as I did that first time. A) This paragraph gives a conclusion and a personal opinion B) This paragraph talks about the things they did in the city (places that they visited, things that they bought, etc.) C) This paragraph starts with general information about the trip (the city, the time, the transport, etc.) Answer key 1=C 2=B 3=A

Useful Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher will set an activity to clarify MF of the TL (linkers: so, because, then, but). The activity will be learner-centered. Students will complete the next phrases from the text in order to identify relevant language conventions. Also, they will see the linkers in different colors. This will help the students to see that these linkers are joining sentences. Students will work in pairs in the breakout rooms. Here the answer key 1. I went to… London 2. And I went with… three friends. 3. So we decided to travel by… bus 4. But we were very excited because… it was our first time away from home. 5. We went to see… all the famous sites 6. Then we went shopping in… Oxford street Then, they will discover the meaning of the linkers. working in pairs in the BR 1. The plane was expensive, SO we decided to travel by bus 2. We were very excited BECAUSE it was our first trip 3. We went to see all the famous places, THEN we went shopping 4. My friends stayed in bed late, BUT I got up early TELLING WHAT HAPPENED NEXT B) EXPRESSING A CONSEQUENCE C) MAKING A CONTRAST D) GIVING A REASON Answer key: SO= EXPRESSING A CONSEQUENCE BECAUSE= GIVING A REASON THEN= TELLING WHAT HAPPENED NEXT BUT= MAKING A CONTRAST Teacher will use this CCQ to clarify the tense that they will need: This narrative is written… in simple past, or in the future tense? If we want to write about a trip that we made in the past… Do we use the simple past or the future tense?

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

First, in pairs, for 2 minutes, students will have a brainstorm about the city or place that they will write about. Teacher will instruct: You are going to write about a trip. So: Think of a CITY/PLACE you have visited Why did you like it? Talk to your partner about that place (2 mins) (local places you visited, the things that you bought, etc.) After this brainstorm, teacher will give instructions and ask CCQ's to make sure that everyone is ready to do the writing task: WRITE about your trip (individually) Are you writing in pairs or individually? Individually Use the slide with YOUR NAME Can you use any slide, or the slide with your name? The slide with my name See the next EXAMPLE to get some ideas If you want to get some ideas, what can you see? The example Use the NEXT PHRASES and linkers (so, then, but, because) Do you have to use the next phrases and linkers? Yes 1. I went to… 2. It was ___ years ago 3. And I went with… 4. So we decided to travel by… 5. But we were very excited because… 6. We stayed in London for… 7. We went to see… 8. Then we went shopping in… If you need help, ASK YOUR TEACHER Can you ask me if you need any help? Yes

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students will work in pairs to check their pieces of writing Here the checklist Work in pairs and check The place he visited The transport he traveled by The local places he visited The things he bought (souvenirs, local clothes, etc.) His personal opinion about the place

Delayed Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
