Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to do a multiple-choice cloze test through focusing on the receptive skill of reading and sub skills of skim\gist reading, reading for details, and reading to infer vocabulary meaning. There are three stages for this reading lesson: pre- reading, while reading, and post reading.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for doing a cloze test in the context of celebrities and spending money

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about How Do Celebrities Spend Their Money? in the context of celebrities
  • To provide clarification of -ed and -ing adjectives in the context of Celebrities and spending money

Procedure

Lead-in 1 (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher tells the class that they are going to talk about celebrities and making money, then she asks the students to discuss the questions 1 and 2 in exercise 1 in pairs. The teacher monitors the class.

Lead-in 2 (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher draws students attention to exercise 2 and asks them to analyze the breakdown of a celebrity's monthly expenses in pairs and to answer the question in the same exercise. Next they report their conclusions.

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher asks the students to read the headline and introduction to the article on page 87 and then to discuss what the article is about in groups of 3 or 4 (exercise 3). The teacher then explains that what they just did is called "gist reading"

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The teacher explains that students are supposed to read the heading again and choose the correct words (1-4) to complete it. She explains that the questions written on page 86 are there to help them to find the answer. Next the teacher asks them to check their answers in pairs and finally to report them.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The teacher asks the students to read the rest of the article and do the exercise 5, which is a multiple-choice cloze test. The teacher gives the instruction and makes sure the students have learned what to do by asking ICQ (Instruction Check Questions). Then They check their answers in groups of 3 or 4 and finally asks one student who thinks all his\her answers are right to read them aloud, the teacher makes sure each correct answer is clear to students by asking for the reason of every one of the answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher explains that students are going to discuss in pairs two questions in exercise 6, she will monitor the students and finally asks them to share their thoughts with their other friends.

Vocabulary Exercise: -ed and -ing adjectives (6-10 minutes) • to clarify the meaning of the sets of the adjectives through inferring them from the text

The teacher asks the students to look at the adjectives which are bold in the text and to match them with their meanings in exercise 7. Then they are going to check their answers in pairs and finally the teacher asks one student who thinks all his\her answers are correct to come to the board and write the answers on the board and students will check their answers.
