Main Aims

  • To provide students with controlled and freer practice of the present perfect tense

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set the lesson context and test Ss' grasp of the distinction between Present Perfect and Past Simple

T will ask Ss a few questions about her background using TL. Have I ever taught English before? Have I ever traveled outside of Istanbul? Which university did I go to? When did I get my degree? After that, T will write on the board three sentence fragments ("I've been to Paris..." "I haven't been to London" "I went to London"). T will divide the class into 3 groups and hand them out time expressions flash cards. Ss will first discuss where these phrases would most likely go to finish the sentences on the board. They will stick the cards on the board next to the appropriate sentence fragments. They will choose one group respresentative to explain why they chose to put them there.

Controlled written grammar practice (3-4 minutes) • To give students practice with written verb forms and distinguishing between Present Perfect and Simple Past

T will distribute the Gap-fill HO and ask Ss to work on the fill-in individually. Ss will then check their answers in pairs before whole class FB.

Form practice drill (1-2 minutes) • To give students practice with forms of common irregular verbs in the Present Perfect and Simple Past

T will chest flashcards of different verbs and ask Ss to produce orally Simple Past and Present Perfect forms for a given person (I, you, s/he, we, they) Verbs: be, give, have, hear, win, write, make, meet, read, see, take Error correction on the spot to the whole class

"Never have I ever..." game (5-7 minutes) • To give students semi-controlled speaking practice using Present Perfect forms in "I've never..." types of statements

T will divide Ss into groups of 4. Ss will take turns repeating the prompt and adding their own statements to the activity, asking the other Ss to check if they too have done this before. Sample entries: Never have I ever... ... been to Izmir ... done judo ... kissed a man on a bus

Concept checking activity (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more context-based practice to check their comprehension of the difference between Present Perfect and Simple Past usage

T will model one example and then ask Ss to come up with possible follow-up questions and predictions about the possible outcome in the present and in the nearest future.
