TP8 Writing
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will practice writing a postcard.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a postcard

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I would ask students to have brainstorm different types of holidays, where do they spend their holidays? What are they going to do in the holidays?

Pre-writing (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Give the students a postcard, to show them what I expect them to later write. I would ask them to read it and discuss with a peer Where the people that wrote the postcard are? are they enjoying their holiday? what have they done? I would ask them to write their questions down into the zoom chat. As a whole class, we are going to review the difficult vocabulary of that same postcard.

Writing task (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to write a postcard

Now that students have analyzed the model text in sufficient detail, we are going to do our own postcard. I am going to show them Canva, a website where you can do your own postcard. They are going to do an individual writing task. I am going to tell students to think of a city they would like to visit, imagine a holiday in that city, and write a postcard home to their parents. Give feedback.

Follow up (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give feedback and ask students to show everyone their postcards. I would focus first on content, then on language and corrections. I would give students 3 more examples of how they can write a greeting postcard.

DEC (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with the feedback of their tasks

I will show students good examples of writing and where they need to improve.
