Description

In this lesson students learn about simple past (both regular and irregular forms) in the context of last weekend. The lesson starts with some discussion about last weekend, followed by some practice including reading task and ends with a listening activity.

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce new vocabulary about activities. To introduce the past simple with its function to talk about the past. To introduce the affirmative and negative form of the past simple and the forms of regular and irregular verbs. To review adverbials of time concerning used with the past tense. To practice the pronunciation of the -ed ending in the past simple. To provide Students with controlled and semi-controlled practice in speaking, reading, writing, listening in the context of last weekend.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First I will greets the students, explain the aim of the class and make sure if they remember things from previous lesson. Then ask them some questions about their activities during last weekend like what did they do last weekend? Did they enjoy their time? And ask some question like are we going to talk about events in past or future?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will show them a slide of reading and I ask them to read it for one time and underline the verbs in the simple past form individually. Are you gonna work in pairs or alone? Will you write anything or just mark them? And after they read it I will ask them what happened in the text? When the action in text are taking place? Now or past? Are these actions finished or still continuing? Have this action taken place one after the other or no?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will show them a slide of present form of the verbs and ask them find past form of them from the text then I will ask them are the words verbs or nouns? Are they in past form or simple form? All of them end in -ed or no? Which one is true? This or that?

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

To give students this chance to use learned grammar I will show the class some of my weekend activities photos and ask them to write in pairs about pictures and make sentence in simple past then I will give them correct answers

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language
