Description

In this lesson, the students will learn when to use a verb +gerund as opposed to a verb plus the infinitive. I will introduce 4 different [verb +gerund] phrases and the students will practice detecting form and later practice in freer speech to make their own.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of verb + gerund in the context of expressing interest, preferences and aspirations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of using verb+gerund phrases to express interests and preferences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T- shares screen of Google slides which includes 4 slides with example verb+gerund phrases. T - reads the sentences, Ss respond according to what they learned the last lesson (so do I, neither do I) . T - nominates some students to say their own preferences while other Ss respond. (What do you enjoy? What are you good at?)

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T directs Ss to complete task on Google Forms by themselves for 3 minutes. T shares screen of Forms and Demos first answer. T sends link. ICQ if necessary. After they are done, T- directs Ss to click "edit answers" by sharing screen and showing the button. T sends Ss to BOR to compare answers with peers for 3 minutes. OCFB. T nominates Ss or asks for volunteers. T- does not explain reasoning yet. T shares screen with google form and clicks correct answers.

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T- shares google slides. T-elicits Meaning from Ss with multiple-choice options and visual clues. T clarifies form by eliciting parts of speech from Ss. Ss choose parts. Review form (subject + verb+ gerund) Ss give an example of each. T models Pronunciation. Eliicits sentence stress from students. includes (intrusive sound) between I/enjoy. and linking for (good at).

Test #2 (8-11 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T instructs Ss to complete second test. T shares screen and demos first answer. Write answers. Ss have 4 minutes. Ss will work alone. T asks ICQs (will you write or choose the correct answer. How much time?) T sends link to google forms test 2. When finished, T sends Ss to BORs to peer check and discuss answers. 3 min then WCFB. T shares screen and nominates Ss to answer. T writes correct answers. (4min)

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T- shares screen of Slides to demo final freer task. Ss will make sentences using the ideas from Slides for 3-5 minutes. T gives demo "I enjoy eating breakfast with my family. (so do I) I don't mind sweeping the floor." encourages other students to agree if appropriate (neither do I). T monitors in BORs and notes incorrect usage and writes on new slide. OCFB and T nominates some Ss to share some of their sentences. T shares screen of incorrect sentences and performs DEC.
