Description

In this lesson, students will learn to talk about their favorite song using description of lyrics, melody, beat and voice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in an interview in the context of songs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a presentation in the context of describing a classmates opinion about a song

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

On a PowerPoint, T shows students pictures of famous singers, from both the US and Mexico. They name them together.

Language Preparation (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss do a quick matching game with pictures and the words: voice, lyrics, melody, and beat. Ss send their answer to a partner in a private chat. T sends Ss a link to a Google Doc with some useful language. In groups, Ss in breakout rooms talk about the phrases and come up with some definitions for any unknown words and add any words they know. T leads OCFB to clarify any vocabulary and to practice saying the phrases with them?

Content preparation (8-10 minutes) • To provide a context for them to think about how songs and music relate to them

On a PowerPoint teacher asks Ss to share If they have a favorite song. Class listens to the song "Happy" and talk about the voice, lyrics, melody, beat.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

In pairs Ss have 10 mins to interview each other about a song that they like using the phrases and creating others to describe why they like the song. Ss then present to the class their partner song and why they liked it.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T takes notes on any mistakes and on any well constructed phrases that the students make and leads a DEC.
