Main Aims

  • To enable students to understand and use second conditional.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice the writing skill by informing students about the punctuation rule in second conditional.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shares some pictures with students in which a luxurious car and and an excellent house is shown then the teacher asks: "Do you think that you can buy this car? Is it possible for you to have such luxuries house?." By these examples teacher tries to introduce the topic of second conditional to students and hopefully elicit some sentences from students that will lead to the presentation of second conditional in the next stage.

Presentation (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation and CCQ form, meaning, and function.

Through demonstration model, the teacher posts a picture of a man who is in prison and he explains the prisoner has got no chance to get free and he is supposed to be in prison for the rest of his life. Above the prisoner's head there is a thought bubble which has the sentence: "If I was free, I would...", then the teacher asks students to say whether the prisoner is thinking about something real or not. In this stage the teacher should CCQ meaning, form, and pronunciation. To CCQ meaning the teacher would ask if second conditional talks about past or present time or if it refers to a real situation or unreal one. To CCQ form he the teacher would write different second conditional sentences which have problems in their structures, then he would ask the students to correct the ill-formed parts.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher gives every student a card that contains a sentence which is different from other cards, like: "What would you do if you were a millionaire, What would you do if you were a presedent,...", then the teacher asks students to complete the sentences on the cards which have been distributed to them, and after completing the sentences, they have to check their answers with their partners after checking their answers all students are supposed to come to the board and stick their cards on the board.

production (5-8 minutes) • To give students a chance to talk about second conditional freely.

The teacher gives students a chance to practice what they have learned by asking them to think about their dreams and wishes that are not going to come true and ask them to say what would they do in case they could make their dreams come true. Students are supposed to work in pairs and then share their answers to the whole class.
