Description

In this lesson students will learn how to write a covering letter. First they will discuss a job Ad within a personalized context related to the teacher's and students' professional life, then the teacher will pre-teach the relevant vocabulary items and analyse the layout and the content the model covering letter in their books. By the end of the lesson, Ss will be asked to write their own covering letter to apply for one of the jobs mentioned in the job ad discussed earlier.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks students to talk about their dream jobs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Teacher shows a model for a covering letter asking students to match the headings to the parts the letter. Accordingly, students will be able to recognize the layout of a cover letter.

qualifications, experience and vacancy (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher highlights the common words and expressions used in writing a covering letter.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students are asked to write their own covering letter to apply for their dream job.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher asks students to swap their letters and check if it has all the elements of a cover letter. proper layout formal language complete content ( purpose, qualifications, experience, skills)
