Description

In this lesson the SS will do some exercises relating to a text describing a person and then write a similar text for homework. They will also complete a reading and speaking task about football.

Materials

Abc Headway B1+ student's book

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about football in the context of the development of football from its origins to the worldwide sport it is today.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of football

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

SS brainstorm words and expressions connected with football e.g. footballer, football team/coach/fan/club/player/match/stadium/field etc. Pre-check vocab/pronunciation: chaos /keɪɒs/, half-time rules, to kick, side (team), posts, to host/co-host (a competition), to qualify, waste ground Ex 1 p. 84 love/hate football - show of hands, why? - elicit a few reasons from class.

Pre-Reading (5-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ex 2, p.84 SS skim the first + last paragraph of text and answer the questions. Class feedback.

While-Reading #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Elicit a few suggestions about how football began. Ex 3, p.84 SS read (about 5 minutes) text and answer questions. Class feedback.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

SS read first sentence and guess the continent. Check ans in text. SS/pairs ans rest of ques, checking in text. Class check.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
