Description

In this lesson, learners will learn/review the grammatical uses of 'can', 'can't' and 'have to/ don't have to'.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Can, can't, have to, don't have to in the context of jobs and work.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for making requests and asking for permission in the context of real life situations.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a about obligations and abilities.
  • To provide specific information listening practice using an audio about obligations and abilities.

Procedure

Lead-In (5-6 minutes) • To get learners interested in the topic

1. Ask your learners to talk about the topic in groups (use breakout rooms) e.g. What jobs need a lot of studies and qualifications?

Presentation through the text (5-6 minutes) • To present TL in context

2. Adapt ex 1 in the grammar section p.30 as an intensive task and have learners listen to the audio text T3.3 (on Google Forms) to fill in the gaps. They compare answers in pairs (via private messages or breakout rooms), then OCFB.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • MFP(A)

Cover Meaning, Form, and pronunciation. (on Google Slides or Forms)

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • to increase learners' accuracy when using target language

Use ex 2 p. 31 to provide controlled practice of the language. (on Google Forms)

Freer Practice (10-12 minutes) • To increase learners' fluency using the target language. Correct any errors.

Learners will use TL naturally to discuss their obligations and abilities.

FB/DEC (2-5 minutes) • To get feedback on the lesson and solidify target language

Conduct Feedback and DEC after Freer Practice to address any issues or questions regarding the TL and/or lesson.
