TP3 READING
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will demonstrate reading for gist and detail utilizing the theme of "public demonstrations." Ss will immediately find personalization with this activity due to the civil unrest experienced in Taksim Square, Turkey earlier this year, making this LP culturally relevant to Ss. The Ss will begin with a warmer exercise to elicit vocabulary. The LP topic will be further personalised through personal questions asked of the Ss concerning, demonstrations. Collocations and a match activity will follow, all of which require Ss to demonstrate reading for detail. A vocabulary review and freer speaking session will finalize the LP.

Materials

Abc "Demonstrations" Reading HO

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about public demonstrations in the context of world events

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary concerning demonstrations in the context of civil affairs and world events.

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To elicit vocabulary from the word, "demonstrations."

The teacher will show a clipart picture of a demonstration and utilize MFP. The teacher will write the word, "demonstrations," on the WB. Ss will elicit vocabulary from the word and tell the class what it means to them.

Lead In (6-8 minutes) • To acquaint Ss with the vocabulary within the lesson.

Ss will utilize GW and be given a HO with pictures of the vocabulary. Ss will have to match vocabulary photos with the vocabulary word on the WB. The teacher will clarify vocabulary misconceptions after the exercise. This vocabulary will be reviewed at a later time in the LP.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide SS with context for the reading tasks.

Ss will be challenged with questions concerning demonstrations utilizing the HO. Ss will be working in pairs to answer HO questions and participate in WC discussion concerning the topic. Exercise 1

Reading for Gist (8-10 minutes) • Ss to read for gist and become familiar with collocations

Ss will match news article titles with the articles they belong utilizing PW. Ss will read articles for gist and select a title, while becoming familiar with collocations, e.g. "anti-war demonstration." WC review to follow. Exercise 2

Reading for Detail (8-10 minutes) • Ss will exercise detailed reading coupled with a vocabulary review.

Ss will read all 5 news articles in order to find specific words to match the definitions given. This activity will also serve as a vocabulary review for Ss. Because this activity is a review I would prefer Ss to work alone. WC review will follow. Exercise 4

Post Reading (2-4 minutes) • To provide Ss with cultural relevance and freer speaking

Ss will view the well-known, "Woman in Red Dress," photo taken at Taksim Square. My goal is for the class to participate in freer speaking about the topic without teacher hindrance.
