Description

In this lesson, students will clarify, review, and practice ways of expressing ideas about the future. First, students will read a news report and review target language. Then, they will practice using the target language through a fill-in-the-blank exercise. Finally, they will practice using the target language in free speech.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of "about to," "due to," "on the brink of," and "likely to" in the context of future predictions about technology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a news report about technology
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in expressing ideas about the future in the context of technology

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells students to discuss the question, "What technology do you want to see in the future?" in groups of 2-3 in breakout rooms for 3 minutes Ss discuss in breakout rooms (3 min) T nominates some Ss as necessary to share answers to lead-in question (2 min)

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T tells Ss they will read conversation and complete Task 1 individually for 3 minutes T shares link to Task 1 and text through chat Ss read and complete Task 1 (3 min) T tells Ss they will review answers over chat for 1 minute and assigns partners Ss compare answers over chat (1 min) T and Ss review answer as whole group, justifying choice with evidence from the text (1 min)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T tells Ss they will work in breakout rooms to match bolded words with their definitions on Google Slides presentation for 2 minutes Ss match words in breakout rooms (2 min) Ss share answers as a whole group with T (2 min) T reviews meaning and form of each term in Google Slides T models and drills pronunciation with aid of CCQs

Controlled Practice (9-11 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T tells Ss to complete Task 2 collaboratively in groups of 2-3 in breakout rooms for 6 minutes T models task completion with first question Ss complete Task 2 (6 min) T and Ss review answers as whole group, justifying answers with information from clarification stage (3 min)

Free Practice (9-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T tells Ss to discuss the question, "How do you think technology will change in the next twenty years?" in groups of 2-3 in breakout rooms for 5 minutes T demos response to question Ss discuss question in breakout rooms (5 min) T and Ss discuss question as a whole group. T nominates Ss as needed to share their answers to the question T answers any questions on material T conducts DEC, addressing mistakes heard during activities questions from Ss on material
