This is a speaking lesson focused on functional language in the context of giving advice.

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking fluency practice in the context of giving advice.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading and functional language in the context of giving advice.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask ss: - Who do you talk to when you have a problem? - Can you give an example? - Did he/she give you good advice?

Content preparation (4-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

• Show the form and give the instructions • Send the Google link [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_dKNk34hSj6jQJPUM5CmZUzBlQA3yOl60Dnw8MgyvBj7iuQ/viewform] • Send ss into breakout rooms to peer check their answers • Check answers together

Language preparation (4-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

• Share screen and go over the form • Elicit different examples for the situation in the conversation [2] • Elicit the structure [3] • Elicit reformulation or different examples with different verbs/auxiliaries [2] • Have ss match the auxiliaries with the correct number to check appropriacy • Check intonation and linking

Speaking task (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

• Give instructions and let ss take a minute to come up with 3 problems • Make sure ss know they have to use different expressions/auxilaries • Send ss to breakout rooms to discuss their problems and advice • Mix and monitor the rooms according to how many ss there are

Feedback and Error Correction (4-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

• Return to main session • Ask ss : What problems did you hear? Who gave good advice? • Write down some incorrect structures that were heard during the breakout rooms • Elicit correction from ss
