Description

This lesson will be focused on grammar, particularly on questions without auxiliaries. This lesson is relevant because SS are already used to these kind of structures, but haven't contrasted them with other questions with auxiliaries. T

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of questions without auxiliaries in the context of quizzes and trivia questions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a quizz
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of creating a quizz in groups

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will share the screen with the Google Slides presentation and instruct the SS: "So, today we will start working in small groups in the BreakOut rooms. You have 2 minutes to talk about these questions: Do you remember “Who wants to be a millionaire”? What was it about? Did you like it? T shares link in the chatbox. T asks: So, are we working individually or in teams? (teams) T will stop sharing the screen, create the BreakOut rooms, set 2 minutes in the timer and ask the SS to join their rooms. T monitors the rooms. T nominates 1-2 SS to answer the questions.

Exposure (6-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shares screen. T instructs: Now, you have 4 minutes to answer this quizz in BreakOut rooms. T uses Question 1 to demo. T checks understanding: So are we working individually or in groups? T sends the link in the chatbox. T guides OCFB.

Highlighting (2-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks: Now, take 1 minute to identify all question words in the quizz. For example, in question number one (Who wrote Macbeth) which one is the question word? T waits for SS to answer or nominates 1 SS. (who) T instructs: Now identify all these words in the rest of the questions. One minute. T instructs: Compare your answers via private chat with (explains who works with who). You have 30 seconds. T guides OCFB

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shares screen. T instructs: Now, match the columns. What information do we want to know when we ask:(reads question words) For example, for the first one. What information do we want if we ask when (moment in time) T lets SS answer or nominates someone. T follows: Do the same for the rest of the question words. Answer in your notebooks. You have 2 minutes to work individually. T shares link. T instructs: Now take 30 seconds to share your answers with your classmates. T explains who is working with who. T conducts OCFB. T shares screen. T instructs: Now, you'll have to look at the examples and answer the questions: 1. How many verbs does each question have? 2. Identify the subject for each question. 3. Which subjects are the same as the question words? You'll work in groups in BreakOut rooms. For example: Who wrote Macbeth? How many verbs does this question have? (2) What's the subject of this question? (Who) Is who the same as the question word? (Yes) You'll have 3 minutes to do the same with the rest of the questions. You'll work in groups in BreakOut Rooms. T shares link. T creates BreakOut Rooms and sets timer: 3 minutes. T conducts OCFB. T shares screen. T says: Now, if we ask: Who wrote Macbeth, where is the stress? (Repeats: Who wrote Macbeth?) (wrote) T nominates SS to repeat the question. T continues: Now, can you identify the intonation? Does it rise or does it fall? (T repeats: Who wrote Macbeth with both intonations) (fall) T continues: Now, for example, if I ask you: Do you like ice cream? Can you identify the intonation? Does it rise or does it fall? (fall) T: Ok, for Yes/No questions the intonation has to rise and for the rest of the questions it has to fall.

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shares screen. T instructs: Now, to practice, you have to choose the correct answer. For example in the first one: (T nominates a SS to read it) What would you choose? (What did you do last night?) T lets SS answer or nominates. T continues: You have to do the same for the rest of the questions. You'll have 3 minutes to work individually. T sends link. T instructs: Now, you'll share your answers in BreakOut Rooms. You'll have 3 minutes. T creates BreakOut rooms. Sets timer: 3 minutes. T conducts OCFB.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T shares screen. T instructs: Now, you'll have to create a quizz with your classmates in BreakOut rooms. You have 5 minutes to write 5 questions. T explains who's in team 1 and who's in team 2. T shares link. T creates BreakOut Rooms. Sets time: 5 minutes. T instructs: "Now Team 1 will answer the quizz of team 2 and team 2 will answer team 1's quizz. You'll have 5 minutes with your peers in BreakOut rooms" T guides OCFB and DEC.
